Where is Cryptocurrency Illegal?
Countries with Outright Bans
While the majority of countries do not explicitly ban cryptocurrency use, there are a small number of countries that have taken this stance. As of November 2021, the Library of Congress identified nine countries with complete bans on cryptocurrency transactions: Algeria, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Iraq, Morocco, Nepal, Qatar, and Tunisia.

Algeria's Financial Law of 2018 prohibits the purchase, sale, use, and possession of virtual currencies.
Countries with Restrictions and Bans
In addition to outright bans, some countries have implemented restrictions on cryptocurrency use. These restrictions vary in nature and may include bans on crypto-related activities, such as:
- Trading on exchanges
- Using crypto as a means of payment
- Cryptocurrency mining
Countries with Cryptocurrency Restrictions
Ecuador, Brazil, and Argentina are among the countries that have imposed partial restrictions on cryptocurrency use.

In 2021, the Chinese government declared all cryptocurrency transactions illegal. Other countries, such as India and Turkey, have also imposed temporary or semi-permanent bans on crypto trading and mining.
